Winter is a season when the body naturally turns inward, seeking warmth, nourishment and stability. In Ayurveda, this period is considered a powerful window for strengthening digestion, immunity and overall
vitality provided we align our choices with nature’s rhythm. Dr Kitthu Suresh, Consultant Physician, Apollo AyurVAID, explains that winter is “one of the best seasons to build resilience when our diet supports the body’s natural intelligence.”
Kindling Agni Through Warm, Spiced Foods
According to Dr Suresh, the cold, dry qualities of winter can aggravate Vata and influence Kapha, which makes warm, freshly cooked meals essential. He notes that “simple additions like ginger, black pepper, cinnamon or turmeric can ignite Agni, the digestive fire and improve circulation.” These spices help the body stay energised rather than sluggish, countering winter heaviness.
Midday Meals for Strength and Nourishment
Dr. Suresh emphasises that winter is also an excellent time to build strength because Agni peaks at midday. Eating a wholesome lunch whether khichdi, millet porridge, root vegetables or lentils cooked in ghee, “supports tissue nourishment, joint health and sustained energy levels,” he says.
He also recommends including fermented foods in moderation, as they “enhance gut function, which is central to immunity during colder months.”
Herbs and Fruits That Support Winter Wellness
Ayurveda places strong emphasis on seasonal herbs and fruits, and Dr Suresh highlights Amla, Guduchi, Ashwagandha, oranges, figs and dates as winter allies. “These ingredients help the body adapt to seasonal stressors and maintain respiratory and immune resilience,” he explains.
Daily Rituals That Anchor the Body and Mind
Beyond food, Dr Suresh reminds us that winter wellness is also shaped by small daily practices. Consistent mealtimes, warm clothing, gentle oil massage, exposure to morning sunlight and adequate rest “help stabilise Vata and optimise the benefits of a winter-aligned diet.”

Ultimately, Dr Suresh says that Ayurveda teaches wellness as a result of deep alignment with natural cycles. When we choose foods and habits that complement the season, “the body responds with greater strength, immunity and steadiness.”
