Devdutt Padikkal entered his name in the history books on Monday (January 12) by becoming the first batter to score 700 runs in multiple Vijay Hazare Trophy seasons. Only five batters—Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi
Shaw, Padikkal, Narayan Jagadeesan and Karun Nair—have managed to score more than 700 runs in one edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, but on Monday Padikkal became the first and only batter to score at least 700 runs in a Vijay Hazare Trophy season twice.
Padikkal needed 60 runs in the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy quarterfinal match between Mumbai and Karnataka at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 1 in Bengaluru on Monday to join the 700-run club, and he achieved the objective during the 24th over of Karnataka’s innings bowled by Shams Mulani.

Padikkal could only manage to score 22 runs against Tamil Nadu in Ahmedabad on December 29, 2025, but in the next two matches played against Puducherry and Tripura, he again scored two centuries (113 and 108).
He was unlucky to miss out on a deserving century against Rajasthan on January 6. In that fixture he got out for 91 runs, and then in Karnataka’s last Elite Group A match, Padikkal scored 35 runs from 39 balls against Madhya Pradesh.

The overall record of scoring the most runs in one edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy is in the name of Jagadeesan. In the 2022-23 edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Jagadeesan played eight matches for Tamil Nadu and scored 830 runs. Padikkal needs to score at least 191 runs in the knockout matches to break Jagadeesan’s record and take the No. 1 position in the list of batters with the most runs in one edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
