The BJP on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after he claimed that manufacturing in India was declining. The criticism came soon after Gandhi shared a social media post
following his visit to the BMW plant in Munich, Germany.
Gandhi praised world-class manufacturing in Germany and said India needed to produce more to create jobs. However, he added that manufacturing in India was “sadly declining”, a remark that drew an immediate response from the ruling party.
Rahul Gandhi’s post from Germany
During his Germany visit, Rahul Gandhi toured BMW Welt and the BMW manufacturing plant in Munich. In his post, he said the visit gave him a close look at global manufacturing standards. He also highlighted a 450cc motorcycle developed by TVS in partnership with BMW, calling it a proud example of Indian engineering.
Gandhi said manufacturing was the backbone of strong economies and argued that India needed better manufacturing ecosystems and large-scale job creation to boost growth.
BJP calls claims “false and misleading”
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari rejected Gandhi’s remarks, accusing him of spreading what he called “fake news” about India’s growth story. Bhandari said hard data showed strong growth in Indian manufacturing, particularly in electronics and automobiles.
He argued that numbers, not political slogans, reflected the true picture of the country’s progress under the Narendra Modi-led government.
Bhandari shared figures to counter Gandhi’s claims. According to him, total electronics production rose from Rs 1.9 lakh crore in 2014–15 to Rs 11.3 lakh crore in 2024–25, marking a nearly six-fold increase.
Electronics exports, he said, jumped from Rs 38,000 crore to Rs 3.27 lakh crore in the same period. Mobile phone manufacturing units reportedly increased from just two to around 300, while the value of mobile phone production rose nearly 30 times.

The BJP spokesperson also pointed to long-term growth in the automobile sector. Vehicle production, he said, increased from about 2 million units in 1991 to 28 million units in 2024. He added that India was now targeting 50 million vehicles by 2030 and aimed to become one of the top two auto manufacturers globally.
Bhandari said India had moved from import dependence to export strength through manufacturing-led growth. He accused Rahul Gandhi of denying economic reality, while insisting that factories, exports and data told a different story.
