What was meant to be a celebratory Pongal release for Thalapathy Vijay has now turned into a tense waiting game. Instead of counting box office records, fans and exhibitors are asking a far more basic
question: will Jana Nayagan even release on time?
With just days to go before its planned January 9 release, the film is yet to receive clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification. The delay has triggered confusion across theatres, disrupted advance bookings, and pushed the makers to take legal steps.
What happened in court
The makers of Jana Nayagan moved the Madras High Court on Tuesday, January 6, seeking urgent relief. However, they did not get an immediate order, and the hearing was adjourned to Wednesday afternoon. During the proceedings, the CBFC told the court that a fresh committee has been formed to re-examine the film.
The court also questioned the urgency of the plea and reportedly asked, “Why can’t the film’s release be postponed from the 10th?” This observation has further added to the uncertainty around the film’s release date.
As things stand, most theatres in Tamil Nadu have not opened ticket sales. While limited advance bookings began in a few states, exhibitors are holding back due to the lack of clarity on certification.
Parasakthi also caught in the mess
The situation has become more complicated with Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi, directed by Sudha Kongara, also facing certification delays. Despite its January 10 release date approaching fast, advance bookings for Parasakthi have not fully opened either.
With both films stuck in limbo, the much-anticipated Pongal clash has turned into a logistical headache for theatre owners.
Theatre owner speaks out amid fan backlash
The tension spilled over on social media after Vasu Cinemas in Kumbakonam announced it would screen Parasakthi instead of Jana Nayagan. The decision sparked a wave of backlash from Vijay fans, prompting the theatre to issue a public statement.
“Just because we don’t screen one particular film does not mean our respect or love for Thalapathy Vijay and his fans has reduced in any way. After we posted about signing Parasakthi, we received comments on X and Instagram that were shocking. We urge you to read them yourselves and ask, were they fair or justified in any sense? The level of abuse, vulgarity and curses went so far that it seriously disturbed our mental peace. Please take a moment to reflect. Deep down, you all very well know how much support we have consistently given to Thalapathy Vijay’s films,” the note read.
Despite the appeal, the theatre continued to face online attacks, showing just how heated the situation has become.
Fans still hopeful
For Vijay’s fans, Jana Nayagan holds special importance as it is widely seen as his final film before fully stepping into politics. Even as uncertainty looms, fan groups continue to keep the buzz alive, hoping the film will still make it to screens as planned.
