Delhi Red Alert: Thunderstorms, rain and strong winds lashed parts of the national capital on Thursday night, bringing much-needed relief from the sweltering heat and humidity that had gripped Delhi through
the day. The sudden change in weather prompted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert, warning residents of severe conditions over the next few hours.
As dark clouds gathered and spread rapidly across the city, gusty winds swept through several areas, accompanied by frequent lightning. Rain was reported from multiple locations, turning the evening sky turbulent and dramatically cooler after a scorching day.

Delhi Rains: IMD Issues Red Alert
The IMD’s red alert, the highest level of warning, signifies a “take action” situation, issued when severe weather poses a threat to life and property. The department forecast thunderstorms and lightning, along with strong surface winds of 70-80 kmph, gusting up to 90 kmph.
Rainfall is expected at most places, with moderate rain at isolated locations, while dust-raising winds are likely over several parts of the city.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution. The IMD has advised people to move into safe buildings, avoid weak or unstable structures, stay away from windows, not seek shelter under trees and refrain from venturing near water bodies during the adverse weather spell.
Extreme Weather Expected Over the Next Few Days
Weather experts attribute the abrupt shift in conditions to a cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and adjoining areas, which has increased atmospheric instability over northwest India, including Delhi-NCR. The weather activity is expected to intensify from Friday as the system strengthens, raising the likelihood of more thunderstorms, rain and strong winds across the region.
The prevailing conditions are also likely to provide sustained respite from the heat, with temperatures forecast to dip over the next few days under the influence of cloud cover and rainfall.
On Thursday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 38.7 degrees Celsius, while the heat index, or “feels like” temperature, climbed to around 44 degrees Celsius due to high humidity.
