Tamil moviegoers something to celebrate this Pongal.
The blockbuster Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay, had to be postponed at the last minute due to ongoing legal and censor board issues, leaving a void in the festive release schedule that Vaa Vaathiyaar has now filled.
Vaa Vaathiyaar Releasing on Pongal
The long-delayed film, which was originally scheduled for release in December 2025, was produced by Studio Green and directed by Nalan Kumarasamy. Financial and legal issues involving the producers derailed initial plans for a December 12 premiere, resulting in unspecified delays.
The creators shared the update by writing, “Vaathiyaar Varaar. VaaVaathiyaar – All set for a grand release on January 14.” The legal authorities permitted the rights of the movie to be sold at auction to pay off the producer’s outstanding debt, allowing the movie to be released this month.

Vijay’s Jana Nayagan Continues to Face Delays
Tamil star Vijay’s highly anticipated Jana Nayagan, which was supposed to premiere during Pongal, was unable to make it into the schedule due to censorship and legal issues, leaving an unusual void in one of the busiest seasons of the year.
This created prospects for Vaa Vaathiyaar as well as other films, such as Jiiva’s ‘Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil’, which was rescheduled for release on January 15 in order to capitalise on the holiday crowds.

Vaa Vaathiyaar is an action-comedy film starring Karthi and Krithi Shetty in lead roles. The film tells the tale of DSP Rameshwaran, a corrupt police officer who defies his grandfather’s wishes for him to uphold the morals and integrity of the late superstar and former Chief Minister MG Ramachandran (MGR).
‘Vaa Vaathiyaar’ is Nalan Kumarasamy’s third project after Soodhu Kavvum and Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum, and his first movie with Karthi. Krithi Shetty, Sathyaraj, Anandaraj, Karunakaran, GM Sundar, Shilpa Manjunath and Ramesh Thilak create the film’s excellent supporting cast.
The Madras High Court delayed the movie, which was originally slated for December 5 but was then rescheduled for December 12, due to unpaid debts. Even a planned Christmas Eve release was cancelled.
An appeal to the Supreme Court at the time was likewise unsuccessful in lifting the restriction. After overcoming these obstacles, the Karthi-starrer is now scheduled to make its much-awaited premiere during Pongal, inspiring optimism in both trade circles and fans.
