PM Modi, speaking in Vadodara, said development of the freight corridor was stalled under earlier governments, claiming not even 1 km was completed in 7–8 years. He highlighted how transport times have improved, with freight movement now taking just 10–12 hours for routes that earlier took around 30 hours by truck.
“Today, the work on the 2,800-kilometer corridor has been successfully completed. The Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors are now becoming the backbone of the nation’s trade and commerce. The Dedicated Freight Corridor is a lifeline for a rapidly developing India; it has transformed the country’s transportation sector,” said the PM.
“Previously, freight trains shared the same tracks as passenger trains, resulting in slow speeds for both travel and transport. However, the Dedicated Freight Corridor has changed this scenario. Today, more than 430 freight trains operate daily on the Eastern and Western corridors. A freight train that once took 6.5 hours to cover 100 kilometers can now cover the same distance in less than half that time. A journey that typically takes 30 hours by truck is completed in just ten to 12 hours on the Dedicated Freight Corridor. Consequently, the operation of freight trains on this corridor saves fuel for both trucks and trains, reduces freight costs, saves time, and benefits the environment,” said the PM.

THE DEDICATED FREIGHT CORRIDOR
The completion of India’s 2,843-kilometer Dedicated Freight Corridor network fundamentally transforms national logistics by connecting Mumbai’s ports directly to northern industrial hubs. By separating freight from passenger traffic, the electrified network slashes transit times from days to hours while significantly reducing transportation costs and boosting inland manufacturing.
The fully operational Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) network, completed on September 8, 2026, fundamentally shifts the landscape of how India makes and moves commercial goods.
By opening the final three sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) covering 326 route kilometers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed the missing port-end link. This directly connects Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Mumbai with industrial centers spanning all the way to Dadri in Uttar Pradesh.

HOW THE CORRIDOR RESHAPES INDIAN MANUFACTURING & LOGISTICS
Direct Port-to-Factory Pipeline: Freight trains can now move uninterrupted from northern manufacturing hubs in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana straight into India’s largest container port (JNPA) near Mumbai, bypassing the heavily congested passenger rail lines.
Massive Cost and Time Reductions: By facilitating the movement of heavy double-stack electric cargo trains, the route slashes transit logistics costs and significantly reduces cargo transit times.
Relief for Public Rail Infrastructure: Shifting heavy industrial freight to a dedicated track frees up nearly 80% of regional rail cargo congestion, decongesting the conventional Mumbai railway network and allowing for faster passenger train journeys.
Boosting ‘Make in India’ Hubs: Inland states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Haryana are effectively brought closer to the coast. Factories located deep within the hinterland can now export manufactured goods with the speed and cost efficiency of a coastal manufacturing zone.
The combined 2,843-kilometer network of the Eastern and Western corridors creates a high-capacity, electrified logistics spine that positions India to double its freight handling efficiency and support massive macroeconomic expansion, according to the PIB press release.
