Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has claimed that the Congress government’s welfare schemes in the state have influenced similar initiatives elsewhere in India and even in the United States.
Speaking at an event at the Congress office, Shivakumar told PTI that Karnataka’s guarantee schemes had been replicated in states including Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar. He also drew a comparison with US President Donald Trump’s proposed $5,000 payment to American adults, saying, “Trump is copying us.”
Shivakumar Connects Karnataka Guarantees To Trump Proposal
Trump had proposed a $5,000 payment for American adults if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections. He referred to the proposed payment as a “Trump dividend”, though details regarding eligibility and implementation have not been fully outlined.
Trump also indicated that the money would have to be spent within the United States, according to USA Today.
Shivakumar used the proposal to highlight what he described as the wider influence of Karnataka’s welfare approach, arguing that the state’s guarantee schemes had become a model for other governments.
Shivakumar Targets BJP Over Hindutva Politics
At the same event, Shivakumar also launched an attack on the BJP, accusing the party of using Hindutva for political purposes. He alleged that funds and materials contributed for the construction of the Ram Temple had been misused.
He also criticised the Centre’s Ujjwala scheme, pointing to the rise in LPG prices while questioning the government’s handling of welfare and household expenses.
‘Congress Believes In Serving Everyone’
Shivakumar said the Congress approach was based on providing support to people irrespective of caste or religion.
Taking a swipe at his political opponents, he said some people use religion “theatrically” for political purposes, while asserting that the Congress would not misuse public contributions or resources.
