Microsoft’s Xbox has reportedly secured exclusive cloud streaming rights for Grand Theft Auto VI, potentially giving PC users a way to play the highly anticipated game without owning an Xbox or PlayStation
console.
According to The Verge, Xbox Cloud Gaming could be the only cloud gaming service allowed to stream GTA 6 when the game launches. The length of the reported agreement has not been revealed.
The report claims Xbox CEO Asha Sharma told employees during an internal meeting that Microsoft was preparing something related to GTA 6 that no other platform holder was doing. Sources familiar with the plans reportedly said the comment referred to exclusive streaming rights.
GTA 6 Could Reach PC Players Through The Cloud
Rockstar Games has confirmed GTA 6 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S, but a PC version has not yet been announced.
The reported Xbox deal could therefore be particularly significant for PC gamers. Instead of waiting for a native PC release, players could potentially access the game through Xbox Cloud Gaming.
This would not be the same as having a dedicated PC version. The game would run on Microsoft’s servers and be streamed to the player’s computer over the internet.
For Microsoft, securing GTA 6 streaming rights could also help attract more users to Xbox Cloud Gaming at a time when the game is expected to become one of the biggest entertainment launches of the year.
Xbox Gets Its Own GTA 6 Advantage
PlayStation has reportedly secured the marketing partnership for GTA 6, with promotional material highlighting the game’s experience on PS5.
The reported cloud streaming agreement gives Xbox a different way to promote the game. Instead of competing only on console hardware, Microsoft could use GTA 6 to showcase its cloud gaming service to PC users and people who do not own a current-generation console.
Cloud Gaming Limits Could Become A Problem
The timing could be important because Xbox Cloud Gaming is also reportedly changing its usage limits in November.
According to The Verge, Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will receive 15 hours of cloud gaming per month, while Premium subscribers will get 10 hours and Essential subscribers five hours.
Microsoft is also expected to offer additional streaming-hour bundles to users who want more access without changing their Game Pass subscription. Pricing for these bundles has not been officially confirmed.
These limits could become important for GTA 6 players, as the game is expected to encourage long gaming sessions.
If the reported deal goes ahead, Xbox could have a major advantage: PC players may be able to experience GTA 6 through the cloud even before Rockstar announces a native PC version.
