Even as weather conditions across Maharashtra begin to change from June 1, bringing the likelihood of thunderstorms and scattered rainfall to several regions, officials have said the southwest monsoon
is unlikely to reach the state before June 10.
According to the latest assessment by the Agriculture and Disaster Management departments, the expected rainfall over the coming days should not be interpreted as the onset of the monsoon.
Pre-Monsoon Activity Expected Across Several Regions
Weather officials have pointed out that the southwest monsoon has not yet entered Kerala, making an early arrival in Maharashtra unlikely. Forecasts indicate cloud formation and isolated thunderstorms across Vidarbha, Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra, and Khandesh. Parts of the Konkan region are also expected to receive light rainfall during the week.
Most of the rainfall activity is likely to occur during afternoon hours, accompanied by gusty winds and lightning in some areas.
Temperatures Set To Ease, But Heat Persists In East Vidarbha
The changing weather pattern is expected to bring some respite from the intense summer heat experienced across the state during May.
Maximum temperatures are likely to decline in many districts over the coming days. However, east Vidarbha is expected to remain particularly hot, with temperatures continuing to exceed 40°C in some locations.
Farmers Advised Against Early Sowing
Authorities have issued a strong advisory urging farmers not to begin sowing operations solely on the basis of the upcoming rainfall.
Officials warned that these showers are pre-monsoon in nature and may not be followed by sustained rainfall. Beginning sowing activities before the actual arrival and stabilisation of the monsoon could expose crops to risks if a prolonged dry spell follows the initial showers.
Farmers have therefore been advised to wait until consistent monsoon activity is established before making agricultural decisions.
Lightning Safety Advisory Issued
The administration has also appealed to residents to remain vigilant during thunderstorms and lightning activity.
People working outdoors, particularly in agricultural fields, have been advised to avoid sheltering under trees, tin sheds, electric poles, transformers or power lines during lightning spells. Authorities have also emphasised the need to ensure the safety of livestock during adverse weather conditions.
State Enters Critical Transition Period
Officials noted that Maharashtra is currently entering a crucial transition phase between summer and the monsoon season. While the changing weather may create conditions that appear favourable for farming activities, the actual onset of the southwest monsoon remains several days away.
With fluctuating weather conditions expected throughout the coming week, authorities have urged both farmers and residents to stay informed through official forecasts and avoid making decisions based solely on short-term rainfall activity.
