What Shubman Did In 2025?
The year presented significant contrasts for the 26-year-old. On one hand, Shubman Gill faced setbacks in the shortest format, having been dropped from India’s T20I setup despite serving as vice-captain earlier. Following a series of poor performances, he was excluded from India’s squad for the T20I World Cup, a notable moment in his career. In T20Is, he managed just 291 runs in 15 innings, averaging slightly over 24 without scoring a fifty.
In stark contrast, Gill’s form in Test cricket in 2025 was exceptional. He enjoyed a phenomenal year, particularly during the tour of England, where he delivered one of the most dominant batting performances by an Indian in overseas conditions. Gill amassed an impressive 754 runs in five Tests at an average of 75.40, including four centuries and a career-best 269. His performances shattered multiple records, achievements that could fill an entire chapter in cricket history.
Overall, in Tests, he scored 983 runs in nine matches at an average of 70.21, with five centuries and one fifty. In 11 ODIs, he accumulated 490 runs at an average of 49.00, with two centuries and two fifties. His elevation to Indian captaincy in Tests and ODIs made the year even more special. He led India to a hard-fought 2-2 draw in England, one of the finest Test series in recent times.
Gill started this year strongly in ODIs, with commendable performances in bilateral series and a significant 188-run contribution to India’s ICC Champions Trophy-winning campaign, including a century against Bangladesh. As he prepares for 2026, Gill’s reflections reveal a player aware of the highs and lows of elite sport, determined to carry forward the lessons from a year that tested him.
