Novak Djokovic’s pursuit of a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title may already be wobbling before the Australian Open has even begun.
The 38-year-old Serbian, now ranked world No. 4, was forced to cut
short a practice session after just 12 minutes on Wednesday, sparking fresh concern over his fitness just four days before the first major of 2026 begins.
Practice Halted After Neck Injury Scare
According to The Tennis Channel, Djokovic was seen receiving treatment on the back of his neck during an evening training session in Melbourne. After struggling with his serve, he called over long-time physiotherapist Miljan Amanovic, who massaged the area for several minutes.
The session was abandoned soon after.
Earlier in the day, Djokovic had practiced with Daniil Medvedev on Rod Laver Arena, dropping a low-intensity practice set 7–5. He later returned for a second hit on Court 10 — but it barely got going.
Rust, Withdrawals and Growing Questions
The injury concern compounds an already disrupted buildup. Djokovic withdrew from the Adelaide International earlier this month, admitting he was “not quite physically ready to compete.”
That decision means the 24-time major champion has not played a competitive match since November 8, when he won the Hellenic Championship in Greece.
Observers also noted that Djokovic appeared short of sharpness during a practice session with Jiri Lehecka on Tuesday, further fueling doubts about his readiness for a two-week Grand Slam grind.
Exhibition Next — If He’s Fit
Djokovic is scheduled to face Frances Tiafoe in an exhibition match on Thursday night at Rod Laver Arena, provided his neck issue doesn’t worsen. He will also learn his Australian Open draw in the coming days — a path likely littered with obstacles.
To lift the trophy in Melbourne for an 11th time, Djokovic may need to beat Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, the two men who have repeatedly blocked him at majors.
