It’s been 25 years since Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel-starrer Gadar: Ek Prem Katha released. As the movie reaches the big milestone, Ameesha Patel, who played Sakina in the film, opened up about the overwhelming
response she received following the movie’s release.
In a conversation with NDTV, Ameesha Patel shared that the movie gave her a massive fanbase in Pakistan and said, “I got the biggest Pakistani fanbase due to Gadar. I had women calling my secretary. Somehow getting the numbers, elderly women called and said, ‘Kya Ameesha ji, Pakistan ko apne rula diya, Sakina ne rula diya’ (Ameesha, you made Pakistan cry. Sakina made Pakistan cry.) Then parents called and said, ‘Humne apni beti ka naam Sakina rakh diya hai’ (Parents called and said they had named their daughter Sakina). They loved Gadar.”
Ameesha Patel compares Gadar with Dhurandhar
Ahead of 25 years of Gadar, Ameesha shared that she believes the footfalls for Gadar 1 and 2 were quite higher than those of Dhurandhar 1 and 2. The actress said, “We’ve come to this journey 25 years later, and we’re still iconic. And we’ve had a part two that has created a tsunami at the box office and become iconic. And combined, Gadar 1 and Gadar 2 have the biggest footfalls, more than even Dhurandhar 1 and 2. Just purely on footfalls, that means the amount of people who have actually entered the cinema houses to watch both films is so heartening, and to feel that I am part of cinematic history, to be privileged, to be blessed.”
More about Sunny Deol-Ameesh Patel’s Gadar
Gadar is an unabashedly emotional love story set against Partition, with Sunny Deol roaring his way into the hearts of millions. Gadar tapped into raw emotions. Set during the Partition, it followed truck driver Tara Singh’s extraordinary journey to reunite with his wife, Sakina, across the border. Powered by Sunny Deol’s larger-than-life presence and songs like Udja Kale Kawan, the film became a phenomenon in smaller towns and single-screen theatres. Following its release, Gadar emerged as the biggest box-office winner, reportedly drawing record footfalls and becoming one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of its time.
