Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were ruthless at the Wankhede Stadium where they registered their biggest-ever victory over long-time rivals Mumbai Indians, handing the Hardik Pandya side a defeat of staggering
103 runs in what turned out to be a one-sided IPL 2026 clash on Thursday. Sanju Samson, CSK’s top-order batter, was the star of the night with a sublime, unbeaten ton, scoring 101* off 54, as the Ruturaj Gaikwad clan raced to the score of 207/6. Mumbai Indians experienced an early blow in the first over, losing Danish Malewar for a duck, Windies spinner Akeal Hosein grabbed his first.
CSK pacer Mukesh Choudhary followed suit, scalping Quinton de Kock for 7 runs in 10 balls. Hosein then removed Naman Dhir for 0 off 3 balls as the Mumbai Indians were reduced to 11/3 inside three overs.
Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Verma then took on the arduous job of rebuilding the innings in front of the home crowd. Hosein tasted blood the third time when he undid Verma for 37 off 29 deliveries as the asking rate kept mounting. MI skipper Hardik Pandya’s stay at the crease was short-lived as he was removed by Noor Ahmed for just 1 run. When Windies spinner got the better of Suryakumar Yadav for 36 off 30 balls, it was pretty much curtains for the hosts who lost four wickets for three runs, faltering from 84/3 to 87/7 in a blink. In the end, CSK crushed MI by 103 runs, their biggest victory over MI since the inception of IPL.
That said, given the tournament’s long and storied history, this was not the biggest victory by runs that the IPL has ever seen.

Let’s revisit some of the biggest defeats seen in the Indian Premier League based on the run margin:
Mumbai Indians Vs Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals): 146 runs (May 6, 2017)
This contest, played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium (earlier Feroz Shah Kotla) between MI and Delhi, was for the history books as the Men in Blue recorded the biggest-ever win in the cherished tournament’s colourful history.
Asked to bat first, MI grabbed the opportunity with both hands as Lendl Simmons (66) and Kieron Pollard (63) powered Mumbai to an imposing score of 212/3. Delhi, playing at home, were bundled out in 13.4 overs, posting just 66 on the board. MI bowlers worked as a unit with Harbhajan Singh and Karn Sharma picking three wickets apiece.
This remains the biggest run-margin upset in all of IPL.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Gujarat Lions (now-defunct): 144 runs (May 14, 2016)
Put in to bat first, RCB needed only two batters to power them to a daunting score of 248/3. Virat Kohli smashed a 55-ball 109 while his partner in crime and good friend AB de Villiers had no mood to stay calm as he caused absolute destruction in an unbeaten 129 off just 52 deliveries. The duo stitched a 229-run partnership. When GL came out to bat, the contest soon became a one-sided affair as M Chinnaswamy Stadium saw Gujarat fold for just 104 runs in the 19th over.
Kolkata Knight Riders vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru: 140 runs (April 18, 2008)
Remember the date? Yes, this was the first-ever match of the Indian Premier League. This is where all the yearly madness kicked off. This was, in fact, the first match of IPL’s maiden season, and boy did KKR’s Brendon McCullum present the perfect inaugural onslaught.
Baz smashed a memorable and unbeaten 73-ball 158, an inning laced with 10 boundaries and 13 sixes. KKR, batting in front of the M Chinnaswamy Stadium crowd, stunned everyone with 222/3 on the scoreboard. RCB’s response was a muted one, as only Praveen Kumar, coming to bat at #9, managed to reach double digits in the entire squad. The Rahul Dravid-led side had only 82 runs in their response, registering what would become the third biggest defeat by runs of IPL.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Punjab Kings: 138 runs (May 6, 2015)
RCB and M Chinnaswamy Stadium seem to be a common theme on this glorious list and Punjab Kings had to endure a Gayle storm when they met the Men in Red at their home turf in IPL 2015. The destructive batter hammered 117 off 57 balls, taking RCB to to 226/3, a score that crushed Punjab’s confidence even before they came out to bat. When they did, Punjab Kings’ deflated batters could only muster 88 in response. Interestingly, 40 of those came off Axar Patel’s bat who scored a quick-fire unbeaten 40 off 21 balls.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Pune Warriors India (now-defunct): 130 runs (April 23, 2013)
RCB, M Chinnaswamy Stadium, and Chris Gayle combo strikes again. This match remains special for only one reason: The Gayle storm that consumed Pune Warriors India in broad daylight. The West Indian batter smoked an unbeaten 175 off 66 balls, including 13 fours and 17 sixes. Gayle’s 175* remains untouched to this day as it remains the highest individual T20 score in IPL history. Pune line-up, boasting the likes of Robin Uthappa, Aaron Finch, Yuvraj Singh, Steve Smith, Mitchell Marsh, responded with 133/9. Batting first, RCB posted 263/5.
