Shubman Gill was appointed as India’s 37th Test captain on May 24, 2025, when the Indian team was announced for the five-match Test series against England. The 26-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab,
in his first red-ball series as India captain, made headlines by scoring a total of 754 runs. In the second Test of that away series, which was played at Edgbaston in Birmingham, he scored 269 runs in the first innings and 161 in the second.
The series against England was a memorable one for Gill, but during a recent interview with Sony Sports, when he was asked to pick the “most special moment in his cricketing career so far”, he ignored the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy and instead picked India’s Champions Trophy 2025 title win.
“Winning the Champions Trophy,” Gill said.

Under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, India won the Champions Trophy title in the first quarter of 2025. The eight-team tournament was hosted by Pakistan, but India’s matches were staged in Dubai due to tense political relations between the two countries.
Gill played all five matches for the world No. 1 ODI team and scored 188 runs. In India’s first match of the tournament, he remained unbeaten on 101 runs against Bangladesh.
‘Anderson toughest bowler’
Gill, who will open the innings for India in the high-voltage Asia Cup 2025 match against Pakistan at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, September 14, was also asked to name the toughest bowler he has faced so far, and in reply, he mentioned James Anderson’s name.
Anderson played a total of 188 Tests, 194 ODIs and 19 T20Is for England during his 21-year-long international cricket career and picked up 704, 269 and 18 wickets in Tests, ODIs and T20Is, respectively. He played 39 Tests against India and picked up 149 wickets, which is the most by any bowler.
Gill has played 15 Test matches for India so far against the English team, and of those 15, in 8 matches Anderson represented the Poms.
The 43-year-old cricketer, who retired from international cricket, overall dismissed Gill a total of six times in eight matches.
