In a dramatic turn of events that has fundamentally upended West Bengal’s political calculus, expelled Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Ritabrata Banerjee has been officially appointed as the Leader of the Opposition
(LoP) in the newly constituted 18th West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The swift transition unfolded rapidly after Banerjee visited the Assembly premises to formally stake his claim before the Speaker. In a calculated show of legislative strength, he asserted the definitive backing of 59 legislators out of the total 80 TMC Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) currently sitting in the House, effectively staging a massive structural rebellion within the party’s legislative wing.
