Navratri, a time of devotion, discipline, and celebration, is also a period when the body undergoes subtle yet significant changes. Fasting, late-night festivities, and altered routines can leave many
feeling drained, dehydrated, and noticing visible changes in their skin. But experts say that with the right approach, Navratri can become an opportunity for a holistic reset, one that balances spiritual practice with physical wellbeing.
“Navratri is a beautiful blend of devotion and celebration, but fasting, disrupted sleep cycles, and high-energy festivities can take a visible toll on the body,” says Dr Garima Gaur, Chief Wellness Officer, The Wellness Co. Fatigue, dehydration, and dull skin are among the most common concerns during this time, she notes.
The first step to managing this is mindful fasting. Instead of restrictive eating, experts emphasise nourishment. Choosing nutrient-dense foods such as fruits, nuts, and vrat-friendly grains helps maintain stable energy levels throughout the day. Hydration, too, plays a critical role.
“Dehydration is often the silent culprit behind dry skin, dark circles, and fatigue,” explains Dr Vijay Nagdev, Chief Dermatologist and Founder, The Skin Doctors. He recommends aiming for 2.5 to 3 litres of fluids daily, including coconut water, lemon water with rock salt, and buttermilk. At the same time, limiting tea and coffee can help prevent further dehydration.
Fatigue during fasting is also closely linked to fluctuations in blood sugar and electrolyte imbalance. Incorporating low glycaemic index foods such as makhana, sweet potatoes, and sabudana (in moderation), along with protein sources like paneer and yogurt, can help sustain energy levels and prevent sudden crashes, Dr. Nagdev adds.
Beyond nutrition, listening to the body becomes essential. “Navratri is not about restriction, but about intelligent nourishment,” says Dr Prarthana Shah, MBBS and Integrative Health Coach. She highlights the importance of hydration as a non-negotiable foundation, along with light, nutrient-dense meals such as fruit bowls, soaked nuts, and simple vrat-friendly dishes paired with protein.
Equally important is rest and recovery. With garba nights and festive activities extending late into the evening, many people underestimate the impact of sleep disruption. Incorporating calming practices like breathwork, gentle yoga, and adequate rest can help the body maintain balance. Breaking the fast mindfully, starting with something light and hydrating before moving to a полноцен meal can also prevent bloating and improve sleep quality.
For those experiencing physical fatigue from prolonged activity, modern wellness interventions can offer additional support. According to Dr Gaur, therapies such as whole-body cryotherapy, oxygen therapy, and compression recovery can help reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and boost overall energy levels—particularly beneficial after long hours of standing or dancing.
Skin health, meanwhile, often mirrors what is happening internally. “When the body is low on hydration, the skin is often the first to reflect it, appearing dull and fatigued,” says Dr Aisshwarya Panddit, Celebrity Cosmetic Doctor and Founder, AuraEdge Aesthetic & Wellness. She advises maintaining a simple yet consistent skincare routine, including gentle cleansing, regular moisturisation, and sunscreen.
Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and Vitamin C can further help maintain hydration and restore glow. At the same time, including antioxidant-rich fruits like watermelon, pomegranate, and papaya in the diet can support skin health from within.
Advanced skincare treatments can also play a role. Dr Gaur notes that procedures such as Hydrafacial and customised medical facials help deeply cleanse, hydrate, and revive skin vitality during periods of stress.
Ultimately, experts agree that Navratri should not be approached as a period of deprivation, but as an opportunity to realign the body. Small, mindful choices—staying hydrated, eating balanced meals, prioritising rest, and maintaining consistent skincare—can go a long way in sustaining energy and radiance.
As Dr Shah puts it, “Consistency over perfection is what truly creates lasting energy and glow.” In a season rooted in spiritual renewal, caring for the body becomes an extension of that practice, ensuring that you remain energised, balanced, and fully present through the celebrations.
