— politicians have other places to be.

April 3 was shaping up to be a landmark day for Mumbai’s infrastructure. The city was set to get its first glimpse of Metro Line 9 and Metro Line 2B, watch the bhoomipujan of the BKC pod taxi project, and witness the ceremonial launch of tunnel-boring machines for the ambitious Thane-Borivli twin tunnel — all in a single day.
The Golden Nest flyover inauguration was also part of the programme. Then it was called off.
Why Was It Postponed?
According to The Times of India, senior leaders expected to attend the Mumbai events are tied up with political meetings in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.
All inaugurations and associated events lined up for April 3 have been cancelled, with revised dates now expected to fall on April 5 or 6, subject to final confirmation from state leadership.
Officials, TOI reported, were clear: the projects are ready. Only the schedule is not.
So What Exactly Are Mumbaikars Waiting For?
Metro Line 9 — Dahisar to Kashigaon
The 4.5-km first phase has completed trials and received key safety clearances, TOI stated. Four stations are ready: Dahisar (East), Pandurang Wadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon.
Once open, commuters from Mira Road will get direct connectivity to Gundavli through seamless integration with Metro Line 7 — a genuine game-changer for Mira-Bhayandar residents who currently have limited east-west options.
Metro Line 2B
The Phase I opening of Metro Line 2B was also among the cancelled events. The line, one of Mumbai’s most talked-about corridors, is expected to ease pressure on the already-stretched western suburbs network significantly.
The BKC Pod Taxi
Perhaps the most buzzed-about project of the lot. The Rs 1,016-crore pod taxi system in BKC — driverless, elevated, and unlike anything Mumbai has seen — was to get its bhoomipujan on April 3. It represents a first-of-its-kind last-mile connectivity solution for one of Mumbai’s busiest business districts.
The Thane-Borivli Tunnel
The ceremonial TBM launch for the 11.8-km Thane-Borivli twin tunnel was also on the agenda. Once complete, the tunnel is expected to cut travel time between the two nodes to around 15 minutes — a journey that currently takes well over an hour during peak traffic.
