Sameera Reddy carved a unique space for herself in Bollywood during the early 2000s with her striking screen presence and versatile performances. Known for taking on a mix of glamorous and performance-driven
roles, Reddy worked across Hindi as well as South Indian cinema before gradually stepping away from films.
Recently, in a chat with Mid-Day, Reddy opened up about the struggles she faced during her time in front of the camera. She said, “As an actor, as a woman, I always felt I had to be fairer. For some strange reason, everybody was always putting fairer makeup on me. So I had to do body makeup also, and that really bothered me.”
She recalled, “I was always made to feel I was never slim enough. I’m a very tall girl, so I was made to feel I was too tall and too big. Somewhere that stuck with me in the beginning. For years, my narrative as an actor was always about my size, when it should have been about talent, acting and many other things. Today I look back, and I do not even know why I allowed that to happen, but that was the industry norm.”
She also mentioned, “I was told, ‘You’re a mother, you’ve put on weight, you have grey hair. You can’t really get back into this line. People are not going to accept you.’ I took that not as a challenge but as, ‘Okay, I’m going to build my own space. If you like it, stay. If you don’t, please leave.’”
Sameera Reddy made her Bollywood debut with the 2002 film Maine Dil Tujhko Diya opposite Sohail Khan. Although the film had a modest reception at the box office, Reddy’s confident debut brought her into the spotlight. Early in her career, she appeared in films such as Darna Mana Hai and Musafir, where her bold and stylish roles attracted attention and established her as a promising newcomer in the industry.
Although she is no longer active in films, Sameera Reddy’s journey in Bollywood remains memorable for its mix of glamour, candidness and resilience. From her early successes on the big screen to her later advocacy for body positivity, she continues to inspire many fans with her openness and authenticity.
