Political uncertainty continues in Tamil Nadu as actor-turned-politician Vijay failed for a second straight day to stake claim to form the government.
Vijay met Governor Rajendra Arlekar and submitted support
letters from 112 MLAs — 107 from his party and five from the Congress. However, the Governor advised him to return only after securing the majority mark of 118 in the Assembly.
Despite a follow-up meeting, Vijay remains short of the required numbers, prolonging the political stalemate.
What The Constitution Says
Under Article 164(1) of the Constitution, the Governor has the authority to appoint the Chief Minister. In a hung assembly, the Governor can exercise discretion in inviting a leader to form the government — often the single largest party or a coalition that can demonstrate majority support.
India has seen several such situations where minority governments were invited to take charge.
Maharashtra 2019
After the collapse of the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance, Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari swore in Devendra Fadnavis as Chief Minister and Ajit Pawar as Deputy CM in a surprise early morning ceremony.
The government lasted just 80 hours before collapsing, paving the way for the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition.
Karnataka 2018
In a hung verdict, the BJP emerged as the largest party but fell short of a majority. Governor Vajubhai Vala invited B. S. Yediyurappa to form a government.
However, Yediyurappa resigned within days ahead of a floor test after failing to secure numbers.
Goa 2017
Despite the Congress emerging as the single largest party, Governor Mridula Sinha invited Manohar Parrikar of the BJP, who quickly stitched together a post-poll alliance and proved majority on the floor.
Manipur 2017
In another hung assembly, the BJP formed a coalition despite finishing second. Governor Najma Heptullah invited N. Biren Singh to form the government, which went on to complete a full term.
Delhi 2013
After no party secured a clear majority, the BJP declined to form the government. The Aam Aadmi Party, led by Arvind Kejriwal, formed a minority government with outside support from Congress.
The government lasted just 49 days before Kejriwal resigned following a standoff over the Jan Lokpal Bill.
What Next For Tamil Nadu?
With Vijay still short of the majority mark, the Governor’s next move will be crucial. Options include inviting the single largest party to attempt a minority government, allowing more time for alliances, or exploring alternative formations.
For now, Tamil Nadu remains in a political limbo as negotiations continue behind the scenes.
