Actress Rani Mukerji’s mother, Krishna Mukerji, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, September 22, at the age of 75. Yash Raj Films confirmed the news and said the family is deeply grateful for the love,
prayers and support extended to them, while requesting privacy during this difficult time.
The statement released by Yash Raj Films read: “With heavy hearts, we share that Rani Mukerji’s mother Mrs Krishna Mukerji, 75, passed away this afternoon.” The family further requested privacy as they grieve their loss.
Who Was Krishna Mukerji, Rani Mukerji’s Mother?
Krishna Mukerji was a playback singer who had associations with the Bengali and Hindi film industries. Available film credits list her as a playback singer on projects including Momer Alo, Haiwan, Teesri Aankh and Tomar Rakte Amar Sohag.
She was married to filmmaker Ram Mukerji, who directed and produced films in Hindi and Bengali cinema and was among the founders of Filmalaya Studios. The couple had two children, Rani Mukerji and filmmaker Raja Mukerji. Ram Mukerji died in 2017 at the age of 84.
Krishna Mukerji’s Connection To The Mukerji-Samarth Film Family
Krishna Mukerji herself came from a family with strong connections to Bengali cinema. She was the sister of National Award-winning Bengali actor Debashree Roy. Through Rani’s father, the family is also connected to the wider Mukerji-Samarth film dynasty, with actress Kajol and filmmaker Ayan Mukerji among Rani’s relatives.
Krishna Mukerji Had A Close Bond With Daughter Rani
Rani Mukerji has frequently spoken about the influence her mother had on her life and career. Earlier this year, in a chat with India Today, Rani recalled growing up in a “humble Bengali family” and said the family had struggled financially. She said, “It never came in the way of my mother’s happiness. Mom had a bright smile through it all. That’s something I have imbibed from her, that whatever the situation, smile through it all and go forward.”
Speaking about her career and the women she draws strength from, Rani had credited her mother in an interview with The Indian Express. “My mother has been a very big and strong influence in my life,” she had once said.
