Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani is currently developing a sequel to his 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots, starring Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi. The story is set to revisit Rancho, Farhan and Raju years
after the events of the original film. The filmmaker shared that the writing process is still underway and there is considerable work left before the script is finalised. In a recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter India, he explained that the sequel will not return to college but instead explore what happens to the characters around 15–20 years later in their lives.
Rajkumar Hirani Shares An Update About 3 Idiots Sequel
Rajkumar Hirani told The Hollywood Reporter India that the sequel of 3 Idiots will show the trio as adults who are now married and have children. The story is expected to focus on their mid-life crisis and the changes they experience as they grow older, raising the question of what comes next in their journeys. “I’m still working on that script. There is a lot of work left. It’s primarily about what happens to these characters 15-20 years later. It’s not about college or anything. They are married and have children now. They are experiencing mid-life crisis, and so we will have to see, now what next?” said Hirani.
3 Idiots, co-written by Hirani and Abhijat Joshi, was widely appreciated for its commentary on academic pressure and its encouragement for people to follow their passions. Its iconic phrase “All is well” became a cultural touchstone over the years. Rajkumar Hirani also indicated that the sequel will continue in the same spirit and will carry a strong message. When asked whether the sequel will also have a message, the director said, “Of course! A big one.”
In April, Aamir Khan had confirmed that a sequel to 3 Idiots is in the works and said the film will revisit Rancho, Farhan and Raju about a decade after the original story.
Speaking to Amar Ujala, the Bollywood superstar shared that he has already heard the story and found it very promising. He mentioned that Rajkumar Hirani is currently developing 3 Idiots 2 and described the storyline as “wonderful.”
“The script still needs some work, but the story itself is really good — unusual, with the same humour as the first film. It follows the characters from 3 Idiots, picking up 10 years later,” he said.
The sequel is expected to bring back the original cast, with Aamir Khan reprising his role as Rancho, though the project is still in the writing stage and details remain under development.
