The Vande Bharat sleeper train is moving closer to launch after successfully completing a high-speed trial run. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday shared a video of the train’s speed test on X.
Vaishnaw stated that during the trial, the Vande Bharat sleeper train touched a speed of 180 kmph. The test was carried out on the Kota–Nagda section of the Indian Railways network and was overseen by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS).
What drew special attention in the video was a simple but striking demonstration. Glasses filled with water were placed inside the coach during the high-speed run. Despite the train running at 180 kmph, not a single drop of water spilled.
Sharing the video, Vaishnaw wrote, “Vande Bharat Sleeper tested today by Commissioner Railway Safety. It ran at 180 kmph between Kota Nagda section. And our own water test demonstrated the technological features of this new generation train.”

The video comes as the Vande Bharat sleeper train moves closer to launch. The sleeper version is designed for long-distance overnight travel. Unlike the existing Vande Bharat trains, which mainly operate as chair car services during the day, this new version will offer sleeper accommodation. It is expected to provide a faster and more modern option for passengers travelling overnight between major cities.
Two prototype rakes of the all air-conditioned Vande Bharat sleeper train have been built by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and are currently undergoing tests. The train is likely to include first AC, second AC and third AC classes, similar to other premium long-distance services.
While the official launch date has not yet been announced, railway sources has said that the sleeper service could be introduced soon if trials and approvals continue as planned. For passengers, the new train promises faster journeys, better comfort and a modern travel experience.
