Pick-Up Van Falls Into Gorge
In a separate incident in Pune district, ten women were killed and 30 others injured when a pick-up van carrying over 40 passengers fell into a gorge on Monday.
Police said the accident occurred near Pait village in Khed tehsil around 1 pm.
The vehicle, carrying residents of Papalwadi village, was headed to Shree Kshetra Mahadev Kundeshwar Temple to mark the auspicious Monday of the Shravan month.
According to officials, the van failed to climb an incline—possibly due to overloading—rolled back, and fell 25–30 feet into the gorge.
Local residents alerted the authorities, and nearly a dozen ambulances were deployed to transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased from the PM’s National Relief Fund.
