Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, but it also comes with added responsibility, especially during the summer months when rising temperatures can pose certain health risks. Dr Nidhi Sharma Chauhan, Obstetrician
and Gynaecologist at Saifee Hospital, shares a comprehensive list of do’s and don’t’s for first-time mothers that may particularly benefit from understanding and following these essential guidelines.
Summer is a time when dehydration can easily occur due to rising temperatures. Therefore, it is very important for a pregnant woman to keep herself well hydrated throughout her pregnancy, especially during summer, as dehydration can be harmful for both the mother and the baby. She should drink plenty of fluids. While drinking only water may sometimes feel difficult, she can include lime juice (nimbu pani), coconut water, or other fluids. It is always better to consume whole fruits, but if she prefers juice, it should be freshly prepared at home. Packaged or outside juices are not recommended, as fiber is lost when fruit is converted into juice.
During summer, sweating increases, so clothing plays an important role. The expectant mother should wear loose, comfortable cotton clothes and avoid synthetic fabrics, as they can increase discomfort and cause skin-related issues.
It is not necessary for a pregnant woman to stay indoors all the time. She can go for walks in the morning or evening. However, stepping out during peak sunlight hours, usually between 12 PM to 4 or 5 PM, should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. If she does step out, she should carry an umbrella for shade and ensure she stays hydrated.
Diet is another important factor. It is advisable to avoid outside food during pregnancy. Meals should preferably be freshly cooked at home. Even fruits should be cut at home, as pre-cut fruits sold in the market may not be hygienic or fresh. Similarly, outside food may not always be freshly prepared and can increase the risk of infections.
It is also important to continue all prescribed medications and attend regular doctor appointments. During summer, due to the heat, a woman may feel exhausted and may lose her appetite. In such cases, it is better to eat small, frequent meals to maintain steady glucose levels and avoid feeling drained.
Seasonal fruits and vegetables should be included in the diet. Fruits with high water content such as watermelon, muskmelon, and oranges are highly beneficial. Mangoes can also be consumed, provided they are taken in moderation and as per the doctor’s advice, ensuring there is no excessive weight gain. Frozen foods should be avoided as much as possible. Fresh, seasonal foods are always a better choice. These are some of the most important things an expectant mother should keep in mind to stay healthy and avoid risks during the summer months.
