Former cricketer Kris Srikkanth has yet again taken a dig at the Indian team management, saying that Shubman Gill will continue playing despite his poor returns in the T20Is and the management is absolutely
not worried about him, questioning on what basis he has been appointed vice-captain.
In the last five matches that Gill has played, which include three ODIs and two T20Is, he has scored 10, 9, 24, 37* and 5, raising questions over his form.
Speaking on his YouTube channel Cheeky Cheeka, Srikkanth argued that Gill’s promotion to vice-captain has made him undroppable, regardless of form or team balance.
“They would not drop Gill for the next three games. They aren’t worried about anything else. He is the vice-captain for the T20 World Cup, which is fixed now. It is also fixed that he is the future T20I captain,” Srikkanth said.
“So they have to play with him (Gill) and build the balance for the rest of the side. He is a certainty, or else on what basis has been appointed the vice-captain,” Srikkanth questioned.
The former Indian cricketer’s concerns go beyond Gill’s role alone. He pointed out that the vice-captaincy call has set off a domino effect in the batting order, leaving multiple key cricketers uncertain about their positions.
“With Gill’s inclusion, the overall balance has gone for a toss, so they are not sure of what to do. Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma don’t have a fixed position and Arshdeep Singh is missing out on the 11,” Srikkanth said.
“The only good thing is the T20 World Cup is in India, so they will escape,” the former Indian cricketer added.
At the core of Srikkanth’s criticism is the omission of Yashasvi Jaiswal, whose outstanding record across formats seems to hold little weight in the current selection setup.
Despite his stellar IPL and international performances, Jaiswal continues to wait on the sidelines.
