Meta Platforms is planning a major equity fundraising exercise to help finance its expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure, with the company outlining stock offerings that could raise up to $95
billion or more, depending on the final structure.
According to Reuters and The Times of India, the plan includes public offerings worth approximately $35 billion and a separate share-sale programme of up to $60 billion.
Meta’s Investments In AI Computing Infrastructure
The fundraising is intended to support Meta’s investments in AI computing infrastructure, including data centres and the hardware needed to develop and operate advanced AI models.
The company has been increasing its spending as it competes with other major technology firms in the race to build AI capabilities. These investments require substantial capital, particularly as demand grows for specialised chips, computing capacity and supporting infrastructure.
The proposed share-sale programme is also designed to allow Meta to raise additional funds while maintaining Mark Zuckerberg’s voting control over the company.
Chipmakers Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom have expressed interest in participating in Meta’s fundraising, according to reports. Such investments highlight the close financial relationship between companies building AI infrastructure and the suppliers providing the chips they need.
However, the arrangements also raise questions about circular financing, where companies invest in customers that purchase their products.
Meta’s fundraising plans underline the scale of investment required to compete in AI. Whether the spending produces sufficient long-term returns will depend on the company’s ability to turn its AI products and services into sustainable revenue.
