The United States is marking the 250th anniversary of its independence on Saturday with nationwide celebrations, even as the country faces political divisions and an intense heatwave affecting millions.
The historic milestone commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence, with events taking place across the country. President Donald Trump is expected to lead the celebrations in Washington, DC, where he will address the public on the National Mall before a large fireworks display, AP reported.
US Celebrates 250 Years Of Independence
On Friday, Trump visited Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, where he warned that communism poses a serious threat to the United States during a speech delivered against the backdrop of the national monument.
Major celebrations are also planned in cities including New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Fireworks will light up the skies over New York City and Chicago’s Navy Pier, while Los Angeles will host a concert led by Queen Latifah, featuring performances by The Smashing Pumpkins, Chris Stapleton and special guest Chaka Khan. Meanwhile, Bristol, Rhode Island, is continuing its long-standing Independence Day tradition, which dates back to 1785.
Heatwave Disrupts Festivities
However, soaring temperatures have disrupted festivities in several places. In Washington, parts of the Great American State Fair were temporarily closed because of the extreme heat, and the city’s Independence Day parade was cancelled. In contrast, the Pacific Northwest enjoyed much cooler weather.
Meanwhile, Fireworks groups expect many more people to set off fireworks at home this Fourth of July. However, the celebrations come as many parts of the US are facing extremely hot, dry weather, increasing the risk of fires. Climate change has made wildfires more frequent and severe, and several regions are under burn bans because of ongoing drought conditions.
In the Seattle suburb of Issaquah, 31-year-old Megan Kurowski took her two dogs to a local park for some exercise before heading to work. She said she was looking forward to celebrating America’s 250th Independence Day and was considering watching the fireworks from a paddleboard. “Everyone’s just, from what it seems, been pretty excited about celebrating 250 years,” she said.
The holiday weekend also coincides with several major sporting and entertainment events, including Major League Baseball games, FIFA World Cup matches and new music releases.
Trump Warns Of ‘Communism’ Threat
The anniversary comes at a time of heightened political and social tensions across the country. Speaking at Mount Rushmore, Trump described communism as a “mortal threat to American liberty,” underscoring the sharp ideological divisions that continue to shape the national conversation.
“It is the greatest threat to our country, including World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor or even 9/11,” the Republican president said.
