As temperatures continue to soar during Indian summers, dehydration is becoming increasingly common, pushing many people towards packaged hydrating drinks and sports beverages. However, plain water alone
is not always enough to keep the body properly hydrated. Essential minerals like sodium, potassium and magnesium, known as electrolytes, play a crucial role in maintaining fluid balance, supporting nerve function and preserving muscle health.
While commercial sports drinks may seem convenient, they often contain high amounts of added sugar and preservatives. According to Dr. Simrat Kathuria, effective and natural electrolyte drinks can easily be prepared at home using simple kitchen ingredients already available in most households.
Dr Kathuria, a celebrity dietician and nutrition consultant with over 16 years of experience, strongly advocates for homemade options. She adds, ““We require more than just water to stay hydrated, especially during hot weather and busy schedules,” says Dr. Kathuria. “Electrolytes are crucial because they regulate fluid movement in and out of cells. When we sweat excessively, we lose these important minerals, leading to fatigue, dizziness, muscle cramps, and dehydration. Homemade drinks offer a healthier, customised way to replenish them without unnecessary additives.”
Why Are Electrolytes Important During Summer?
Electrolytes control hydration by managing fluid balance between the inside and outside of cells. Excessive sweating from hot weather, intense exercise, or illness depletes these minerals. Replenishing them naturally helps restore energy levels and protects against heat-related issues.
Dr. Kathuria explains that replenishing electrolytes naturally can help restore energy levels and support recovery, especially during extreme weather conditions.
“People often underestimate how much electrolyte loss happens through sweating. Water alone may not always be enough in certain situations,” she says.
Easy-to-make DIY Electrolyte Drink You Can Make At Home
According to Dr. Kathuria, one of the easiest homemade electrolyte solutions requires only four common ingredients.
Basic DIY Electrolyte Formula
- 1 litre water
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1–2 tablespoons sugar or honey
- 2–3 tablespoons lemon juice
“This combination works similarly to a mild oral rehydration drink,” says Dr. Kathuria. “The salt provides sodium, lemon adds potassium and flavour, while sugar or honey helps the body absorb electrolytes more efficiently.”
The ingredients should be mixed thoroughly and consumed fresh.
Can Coconut Water Work As A Natural Electrolyte Drink?
Coconut water is often considered one of the most natural electrolyte-rich beverages because of its potassium content and trace minerals.
Dr. Kathuria suggests enhancing plain coconut water with a small pinch of salt and a squeeze of lime juice for added hydration benefits. “It works particularly well after physical activity or prolonged heat exposure,” she explains.
Fruit-Based Electrolyte Drink
You can easily customise the drink using seasonal fruits for extra nutrition and taste:
- Orange juice + salt + water (boosts vitamin C and potassium)
- Watermelon juice + mint + pinch of salt (refreshing and cooling)
- Banana smoothie + milk + pinch of salt (great for energy and muscle recovery)
These variations deliver natural sugars and essential micronutrients without artificial additives.
When Should You Drink Homemade Electrolytes?
DIY electrolyte drinks can be useful during:
- Extreme heat and outdoor exposure
- Exercise or sports activities
- Mild dehydration during illness
- Long travel days or fasting periods
However, Dr. Kathuria cautions that severe dehydration may still require medically approved oral rehydration solutions and professional advice.
It is important to note that moderation remains important. Dr. Kathuria advises moderation with salt and sugar. “People with kidney disease, hypertension, or diabetes should consult their doctor before making this a regular habit,” she notes. Always prepare fresh batches to avoid contamination.
