Vanuatu Earthquake: Two earthquake reports, measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 6.9, were recorded in the Vanuatu Islands region of the South Pacific Ocean, according to preliminary information from earthquake monitoring
sources.
The first report recorded a magnitude 7.2 earthquake, with its epicentre around 200 km west of Sola, Vanuatu, at a depth of 10 km. A second reading, reporting a magnitude 6.9 tremor, followed around 25 seconds later. Its epicentre was placed approximately 197 km west-northwest of Port-Olry, also at a depth of 10 km.
It was not immediately clear whether the reports represented two separate earthquakes or preliminary estimates of the same seismic event.
Tsunami Threat, Damage Reports Awaited
The tsunami status remained unconfirmed in the available reports. There was also no immediate information about casualties, damage to buildings or disruption across Vanuatu.
Authorities and monitoring agencies were yet to confirm the potential impact of the reported seismic activity. Residents in coastal areas should follow official advisories issued by Vanuatu authorities and recognised tsunami-warning agencies.
Why Vanuatu Is Prone To Earthquakes
Vanuatu is an island nation in the South Pacific, east of Australia and northeast of New Caledonia. It lies in a seismically active zone associated with the movement of tectonic plates, where earthquakes and volcanic activity are common.
The reported epicentres were offshore and west of Vanuatu’s islands. Powerful undersea earthquakes can trigger tsunamis if they cause significant displacement of the seabed, pushing water outward in waves that may reach nearby coastlines.
However, a strong earthquake does not automatically generate a tsunami. The risk depends on the nature of the fault movement, the amount of seabed displacement and other geological factors.
Vanuatu’s location in the Pacific means that a tsunami generated in surrounding waters could potentially affect nearby islands and coastlines. Any threat to Australia or other countries would depend on the characteristics of the earthquake and would need to be assessed by official tsunami-monitoring agencies.
