Mathura, Aug 11 (PTI) The water level of the Yamuna river has been rising in Mathura following continuous rainfall in the upper reaches and release of water downstream, prompting the district administration
to activate flood-control measures, officials said on Tuesday.
District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh directed officials to activate all flood posts and asked sub-divisional magistrates and revenue officials in all tehsils to closely monitor the river’s water level and keep all necessary arrangements in place to deal with any possible flood situation.
Revenue officials in villages near the Yamuna in Mant, Chhata, Sadar and Mahavan tehsils have been instructed to remain in their respective areas and regularly inspect low-lying areas along the river, Singh said.
“With the rising water level of the Yamuna, water has started entering low-lying areas. All necessary arrangements have been put in place as a precaution,” he said.
Flood posts have been equipped with divers and boatmen so that relief and rescue operations can be launched immediately if required, officials said.
The administration said the water released from the upper reaches has not caused a serious situation so far. However, authorities are maintaining a high alert in view of continued rainfall in the hilly areas and are monitoring the river’s water level continuously.
Singh appealed to people living along the river and in low-lying areas to exercise caution and avoid going near the Yamuna amid the rising water level.
As a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incident, operation of boats and steamers in the Yamuna has also been suspended, he said. PTI COR KIS NB NB
