The long-pending widening work on Uttarahalli Main Road, also known as Dr Vishnuvardhan Road, is set to restart soon. The plan aims to convert a 3.4-km stretch into a signal-free corridor, easing daily
traffic between Mysuru Road and Kanakapura Road. The project will directly benefit commuters from areas such as Kengeri, Mylasandra, Uttarahalli and adjoining neighbourhoods.
The work will be carried out by Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Ltd (B-SMILE) under the Greater Bengaluru Authority. The project cost is estimated at Rs 51 crore, and officials need to acquire 133 properties along the alignment. One of these properties reportedly belongs to an elected representative.
So far, 15 property owners have opted for Transferable Development Rights (TDR), and 4 owners have already received their TDR documents. Others are waiting for formal acquisition notices. If approvals move swiftly, officials say work could resume around Sankranti, with completion targeted in about 6 months.
What Has Been Completed and Why the Project Stalled
Before the project was paused, the earlier civic body had already completed initial tasks such as excavation, utility shifting and ground preparation. Work was completed from JSS Academy of Technical Education to Adithya Bakery, covering roughly 1 km of road.
However, the remaining 2.4 km stretch was held up due to objections from property owners and delays in securing clearance for tree removal. The alignment passes through pockets with significant tree cover, which required permission from forest-related authorities.
Utility shifting has progressed meanwhile. B-SMILE has paid Rs 14 lakh to BESCOM to relocate electricity poles along the corridor.
What the Upgraded Road Will Look Like
Once finished, the new Uttarahalli Main Road will be 24 meters wide. The design includes:
- A 1-meter central median
• Footpaths of 1.5 meters on both sides
• Two carriageways, each 8.5 meters wide
The road surface will be a durable blacktop layered to meet specified thickness standards.
Most importantly, the entire 3.4-km stretch is planned to be signal-free. This means smoother and faster movement for vehicles traveling between Mysuru Road and Kanakapura Road, two major arterial routes in west and south Bengaluru.
Engineers have confirmed that traffic flow in both directions will be maintained throughout construction. The road will not be completely closed at any stage.
What Could Delay the Restart
Despite positive movement, a few challenges remain. Some property owners are yet to agree to acquisition, and departments need to complete clearances related to tree removal. Any delay in these approvals could push the project timeline further.
Officials say that once these hurdles are cleared, widening and asphalting can begin quickly. The goal is to finish the full stretch within 6 months of restarting.
Why This Matters for Bengaluru Traffic
The Uttarahalli Road upgrade is strategically important because it connects two major highways and serves rapidly growing residential belts. A signal-free corridor here can reduce bottlenecks at multiple junctions, cut travel time, and improve connectivity for thousands of daily commuters.
For the broader city network, the success of this corridor will also influence similar upgrades planned under the city’s larger infrastructure push.
