“Organic” has become a buzzword on grocery shelves—but how much of it is actually real? With rising demand, fake and misleading labels are slipping into the market, making it harder to tell what’s genuinely
organic and what’s not. That is why knowing what to check before you buy is more important than ever.
India’s food regulator, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), has warned consumers to stay alert, as misleading claims and fake organic products are on the rise.
Simply trusting the word “organic” on a package isn’t enough anymore. Knowing what to check can make all the difference between buying authentic produce and falling for clever marketing.
Look For The ‘Jaivik Bharat’ Logo First
One of the easiest ways to verify organic products is by spotting the Jaivik Bharat logo. This is an official mark issued under the Government of India, ensuring that the product meets certified organic standards.
Alongside this, always check for a valid FSSAI license number on the packaging. If either of these is missing, it is a red flag—and best avoided.
Check The Accreditation Number
Every certified organic product comes with an accreditation or certification number linked to an authorised agency. This number confirms that the product has followed all organic standards—from cultivation to packaging.
If the package doesn’t mention a certifying body or its number, chances are the “organic” label is just a marketing tactic.
Don’t Judge By Price Alone
A higher price tag doesn’t guarantee authenticity. Many fake products are sold at premium prices to appear more credible. Instead of relying on cost, focus on verified labels and certifications.
Inspect Packaging Carefully
Before buying, take a closer look at the packaging. Genuine organic products usually provide clear, detailed information about certification, origin, and compliance. Vague or incomplete details should raise suspicion.
Authorities urge consumers to stay vigilant and informed while shopping. Understanding these basic checks not only helps you avoid fake products but also ensures you’re not compromising on food quality.
