For many Bollywood stars in the ’90s, fame came with constant scrutiny. Long before celebrities could share their side instantly on social media, rumours and sensational headlines often shaped public opinion
overnight. Actor Raveena Tandon says that era left many actors vulnerable, especially when media narratives spiralled out of control.
Reflecting on her journey during a recent appearance on Not Done Yet, Raveena opened up about the impact of yellow journalism on actors at the height of their careers. Despite being among the biggest stars of the decade, she said public perception was often dictated by editors and tabloids.
Speaking to Malini Agarwal on the show’s second episode, the actor explained how today’s social media culture has changed things for celebrities. According to her, actors now have the ability to directly communicate with fans and address controversies in real time — something that simply wasn’t possible back then.

“I think yellow journalism had no control that time. And one could not probably even clear the air sooner, faster, like you can now do on Instagram or put out a post and you have a direct interaction with your audience, which was not earlier,” she said.
Raveena also spoke about how media relationships often influenced coverage in the industry during the ’90s. She hinted that celebrities who maintained good equations with editors were treated differently, while more private personalities struggled to escape constant speculation.
“So that was, you just had to wait till the next headline and a very tiny apology which really made no sense. So the headline just, the damage was done by that. It sat on in people’s minds, and the damage was done, and there was no reversing it,” she added.
This is not the first time the actor has addressed the issue publicly. In an earlier interview with Filmfare, Raveena recalled being subjected to harsh personal criticism in the press. She had said she wished she could go back in time and “sue the pants off” those responsible for publishing false stories about her. The actor also revealed that she faced body shaming and personal attacks during that phase of her career and felt “completely at the mercy of editors”.
On the work front, Raveena was last seen in Ghudchadi alongside Sanjay Dutt. She will next appear in Welcome To The Jungle, headlined by Akshay Kumar. The ensemble entertainer also stars Suniel Shetty, Disha Patani, Jacqueline Fernandez, Arshad Warsi, Jackie Shroff, Paresh Rawal and Lara Dutta, among others. She also has Vishwanath & Sons with Suriya in the pipeline.
