US President Donald Trump asserted Wednesday that Lake Ontario, the smallest of the Great Lakes that lie on the US-Canadian border, will now be known as ‘Lake America’, adding that the State of New Mexico
should be renamed ‘New America’.
His statement came amid a fierce trade war between the United States and Canada, after the White House last month imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods after several rounds of talks had yielded no breakthrough.
“…Lake Ontario, we’re going to call that now Lake America… Canada very much wants to make a deal. They’re dying to make a deal. But it’s going to be called Lake America… You have a neighbouring state, New Mexico. We think it should be called New America…” Trump said.

After Mexico, Canada is the second-largest trading partner of the United States. However, its trade is less diversified than that of Mexico.
On Tuesday, the United States banned a swath of Canadian alcoholic beverages, motorcycles and dairy products from import on Tuesday, September 8, with an already-acrimonious trade spat between the two nations intensifying.
The announcement followed Canada’s retaliatory move, which its Prime Minister Mark Carney described as “dollar-for-dollar” tariffs on US goods, including steel, clothing and furniture.
Hormuz Should Be Renamed ‘Trump Strait’
US President Donald Trump reiterated that the crucial Strait of Hormuz should be renamed the ‘Trump Strait’, asserting that the United States is winning the war with Iran.
He claimed that oil prices will take a dip as soon as “we win the war with Iran, which is taking place right now”.

“We are winning it”.
“I think we should call the Strait of Hormuz the ‘Trump Strait’… I’m sure the Iranian leadership will be thrilled with that… Don’t think they’re too happy about. I don’t think they’re too happy about anything. Their country’s falling apart…” he said.
The assertion came even as West Asia remained embroiled in an already-volatile situation following a renewed escalation between Washington and Tehran.
Iran said Wednesday that it attacked more than a dozen vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, while expanding a newly declared no-go zone beyond the strategic waterway.
Tehran also said its forces struck a US military base in Jordan in response to American attacks that destroyed five Iranian oil tankers a day earlier. The latest round of escalation poses a threat to maritime shipping in the Strait, especially at a time when the world is already witnessing energy prices skyrocketing.
