According to officials, at least 10 people have been rescued from the debris and shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The collapsed structure belonged to Behera Brothers, which was setting up a multi-storeyed warehouse and cold storage facility.
The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority had granted a 30-year lease to M/s Behera Brothers for the project with effect from August 1, 2024.
Meanwhile, CPI(M) leader Fayaz Ahmad Khan blamed the Kolkata Port authorities and the state administration for the incident, alleging that repeated complaints about illegal construction activities had been ignored.
“The Kolkata port authorities and administration must take responsibility for this because people complained multiple times about the illegal work happening here. But this is the result of the money game, where innocent workers and common people are killed. The accountability for the casualties should go to the current state government,” he said.
