A Reddit post has drawn attention online after an employee claimed that around 80 Indian customer-service workers at a US-based bank were informed of their layoffs during a brief Google Meet call.
The post
was shared on the Reddit community r/IndianWorkplace, where the employee alleged that the entire customer-service team in India was told that their employment was being terminated during the virtual meeting. According to the account, the meeting lasted only about five minutes.
The employee claimed that they were scheduled to work a 6:30 pm shift but were initially instructed to work from home that day because of what the company described as “operational reasons”. Later, at around 9:30 pm, employees were reportedly asked to join a Google Meet with senior management.
According to the Reddit post, employees were then informed that their jobs were being terminated.
“All 80 employees! All gone,” the employee wrote, claiming that the layoffs could affect around 80 families.
What The Reddit Post Claims About The Layoffs
The employee alleged that the company attributed the decision to performance and output. However, the worker questioned that explanation, particularly because the reported job cuts affected the entire team rather than being limited to individual employees.
The post did not publicly identify the bank, and the claims have not been independently verified. It is therefore not possible to establish from the Reddit account alone how many employees were affected, whether all members of the team were terminated or what the company’s actual reasons for the decision were.
Other Reddit users subsequently joined the discussion, with comments focusing on job security, outsourcing and the risks faced by customer-service employees working for global companies.
Employees Allegedly Informed During A Short Video Call
One of the aspects that attracted attention was the alleged manner in which the layoffs were communicated.
Instead of employees being informed individually, the Reddit user claimed that an entire team was brought together on a virtual meeting before being told about the terminations.
With companies increasingly relying on remote and hybrid work, video conferencing platforms have become a routine way for managers to communicate with employees across different cities and countries. The same tools can also allow organisations to deliver announcements to large groups at the same time.
For employees, however, receiving news of a job loss in a group video call can make the process particularly abrupt, especially when there has been little or no prior indication that layoffs are coming.
Questions Around Job Security And Customer-Service Roles
The Reddit discussion also prompted questions about whether employees had received any warning that their jobs could be at risk.
The post described uncertainty among workers following the reported announcement, particularly for employees working in customer-service roles and those with financial and family responsibilities.
Job losses can have consequences beyond the immediate loss of salary, including financial uncertainty and the need to find alternative employment. For employees in India’s business-process outsourcing and customer-service sectors, sudden changes in business operations can also raise questions about notice periods, severance and other employment terms.
Those conditions, however, depend on the employee’s contract, employer, role and applicable employment rules. They cannot be established from the Reddit post alone.
Claims Have Not Been Independently Verified
The reported layoffs remain based on the account of one Reddit user. The identity of the bank, the exact number of employees affected and the circumstances surrounding the alleged terminations have not been independently established. It is also unclear from the post whether the reported 80 employees represented an entire customer-service operation or one particular team or function.
