India has several unusual railway stations, but few are as extraordinary as Hili Railway Station in West Bengal. Located in the Dakshin Dinajpur district near the India Bangladesh border, the station became
famous because the international boundary between the two countries runs directly beside it, making it one of the rare railway stations in the world built almost exactly on an international border.
What makes Hili especially fascinating is the way the border cuts through the surrounding area. According to the Indian Railways archives, parts of the railway infrastructure built during British rule ended up extremely close to what later became the India East Pakistan border after Partition in 1947. When Bangladesh was formed in 1971, the region officially became part of the India Bangladesh international boundary zone.
The station itself lies on the Indian side in West Bengal, while Bangladesh begins just beyond the fencing nearby. Regional reports have previously described how the station area and nearby tracks once appeared to merge almost directly into the border zone before stricter fencing and security measures were introduced. Even today, passengers standing near the station can often see Bangladeshi settlements and activity visible just metres away.
Hili town itself carries a complicated history because Partition split the region between two countries almost overnight. According to Bangladesh Liberation War archives and historical accounts from railway historians, markets, neighbourhoods and transport links in the area were abruptly divided after the Radcliffe Line was drawn.
Today, the station is monitored closely by the Border Security Force because of its strategic location. Reports from the BSF and local administration describe heavy fencing, patrol roads and security checkpoints surrounding much of the station area. The region also witnessed intense fighting during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, further adding to its historical importance.
Over time, Hili Railway Station has become a curiosity for railway enthusiasts and travellers fascinated by unusual geography. Videos and photographs of trains moving beside international border fencing frequently go viral online because the location looks unlike almost any other railway station in India.
Although Hili is not among India’s busiest railway stations, it remains one of the country’s most geographically unique rail locations a place where a train journey unfolds directly beside another nation’s border.
