Jio Platforms has emerged as the biggest winner for IPO allottees among India’s five largest public issues, with its shares making a strong debut on the stock exchanges at a premium of 21.36% over the issue price.
The stock opened at Rs 1,358 apiece on the BSE and NSE, against an issue price of Rs 1,119, delivering substantial listing gains to investors. The debut placed Jio ahead of other mega IPOs, including those of the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), Hyundai Motor India, Paytm and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), in terms of returns on listing day.
For investors who received shares under the shareholder reservation category, the gains were particularly significant. An allottee holding the minimum lot of 23 shares would have made a profit of Rs 5,497 at the listing price. Retail investors allotted a lot of 12 shares would have gained Rs 2,868.
In contrast, LIC, Hyundai Motor India and Paytm made their stock market debuts below their respective issue prices, while NSE shares listed at a modest premium of around 1%.
Strong subscription sets the stage for blockbuster debut
The strong listing followed an overwhelming response to Jio Platforms’ public issue, which attracted bids worth more than Rs 7.5 lakh crore and received over 1.3 crore applications, according to managing director Akash Ambani.
The IPO was subscribed 22.19 times overall, with qualified institutional buyers (QIBs) bidding for 70.55 times the shares reserved for their category. The institutional appetite was also evident in the anchor investor book, which saw demand of more than Rs 2.5 lakh crore against an offering of Rs 8,110 crore.
Addressing the listing ceremony, Ambani said the investor response had surpassed the company’s expectations.
“The response surpassed our imagination, breaking records in every investor category. We were fully subscribed for India’s largest IPO within 95 minutes of launch, the fastest ever India has seen,” he said.
The successful debut marks a significant step for the Reliance Industries-backed digital services business as it transitions into a publicly traded company, giving investors an opportunity to participate directly in its growth.
Jio overtakes Airtel in market value
Beyond the listing gains, Jio Platforms’ market debut reshaped the telecom sector’s market-capitalisation rankings, with the company overtaking Bharti Airtel to become India’s most valuable telecom operator by market value.
The listing also reinforced the standing of Reliance Industries, Jio’s parent, among India’s largest business groups. The occasion was marked by a ceremonial gong strike at the National Stock Exchange of India, attended by members of the Ambani family and senior company executives.
Akash Ambani outlines focus on long-term value creation
Ambani said the company’s next phase would focus on expanding digital access, strengthening its customer offerings and delivering sustainable returns to shareholders.
“As trustees of your wealth, our duty is to protect it, grow it decade after decade. The only way is by creating disproportionate value for our customers,” he said.
He also pointed to the scale of Jio’s digital ecosystem, which serves more than 540 million customers through its homegrown platforms. The company intends to build on this reach by continuing to invest in digital infrastructure and services, while exploring opportunities to expand its presence in India and overseas markets.
“We promise to take Jio to greater heights of growth, excellence, and reputation in India and the world,” Ambani said.
Jio Platforms’ entry into the stock market thus combines a record-setting public offering with strong listing-day returns for allottees. The challenge ahead will be to translate investor enthusiasm into sustained business growth and long-term shareholder value.
