Nature has a way of surprising people when they least expect it. A stretch of water in Kochi is now drawing attention online after videos showed it glowing electric blue at night. The rare phenomenon,
locally called kavaru, has appeared again in the pokkali fields near Kumbalangi and Chellanam. Videos showing electric-blue light rippling through dark waters are flooding social media. For many viewers, it feels straight out of a movie scene. For locals, it’s simply nature doing what it has always done.
Viral Clip That Caught Everyone’s Attention
The latest viral video was shared by travel creator Athulya Nambiar, who described the experience as something visitors shouldn’t miss while in Kochi. Shot late at night, the clip shows water glowing with every movement, lighting up hands and waves in neon blue. The reel quickly drew attention online. Thousands flooded the comments asking for exact locations and timings.

One user wrote, “Can you send the location, I have reached Kochi today and would love to explore this place.” “This is unbelievable, almost unreal,” commented another person.
What Exactly Is Kavaru
According to Onmanorama, Kavaru is not new to Kerala’s coastal villages. It is a natural bioluminescence caused by microscopic bacteria, algae, plankton and fungi present in highly saline water. These organisms emit light as a defence mechanism, often triggered during the summer months.
Locals refer to it as “cold light” because it produces a glow without heat. The effect is strongest in the pokkali fields spread across Kumbalangi and Chellanam.
Best Time And Conditions To Visit
The phenomenon usually appears between early January and May. Responding to questions online, Athulya clarified, “Only during the season. From early Jan to May.” When asked about the best month, she replied, “February best time.” Locals add that moonlight plays a role too. On brighter nights, the glow appears weaker, while it becomes more visible as the full moon phase fades.
Many viewers were reminded of the iconic bioluminescent scene from the Malayalam film Kumbalangi Nights, which first introduced kavaru to a wider audience. After the film’s release, tourist footfall in the area increased sharply. Athulya also cautioned visitors, saying, “Guys, the season has just started. Make sure to check with the locals before visiting.” The renewed attention has brought both excitement and concern.
