Ireland scripted history on Friday, registering their first T20I victory over India. After losing 8 consecutive matches since 2009, Ireland defeated the men in blue by 34 runs in Belfast to take a 1-0
lead in the series.
Immaculate Ireland bowlers capitalised on Indian batters’ impatience on a lively, pace-friendly pitch, hitting exemplary lengths to script a historic 34-run victory in the first T20I here on Friday. It was Ireland’s first-ever win over reigning T20 world champions India in any format, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Chasing 183 on a surface aiding quick was achievable, but required a more measured, pragmatic approach after the powerplay. India, however, lacked that patience and were bowled out for 148, despite Abhishek Sharma smashing a 20-ball fifty.
Debutant pacer Jai Moondra (2/26) struck the first blow against his country of origin, inducing an inside edge from Sanju Samson onto the stumps. Ireland’s bowlers maintained their discipline, consistently pulling their lengths back as Indian wickets fell at regular intervals.
Ishan Kishan perished attempting a trademark leg-side hack off Matt Hollard (3/28), with Lorcan Tucker completing a straightforward catch inside the circle.
In his first game as India’s full-time T20I captain, Shreyas Iyer tried to flick a slower delivery from Hollard but failed to get the timing, finding George Dockrell in the deep. India raced to 68 in the powerplay but had already lost three wickets.
Amid the collapse, Abhishek produced a sparkling knock, reaching his fifty in just 20 balls and taking on Liam McCarthy with four boundaries in an over to briefly tilt the momentum. However, the left-hander’s innings ended when he pulled McCarthy straight to Ben Calitz, handing Ireland a crucial breakthrough.
Those smiles in the Irish camp widened further as Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube failed to make significant contributions. The final blow came when Arshdeep Singh fell to Matthew Humphreys, triggering jubilant celebrations among the Irish players.
