India defeated Afghanistan by 170 runs in the second ODI of the ongoing three-match series on Wednesday (June 17) to take an unassailable 2-0 lead.
In the match played at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, the hosts
rode on centuries from captain Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan to post 402 all out in 49.5 overs before bowling Afghanistan out for 232 in 44.3 overs.
Gill top-scored for the world’s No. 1-ranked ODI side with a brilliant 154 off 110 balls, hitting 22 fours and two sixes, while Ishan smashed 125 from just 79 deliveries, an innings studded with 14 fours and seven sixes.
Batting at No. 4, Ishan needed only 71 balls to reach his century, while Gill completed his hundred in 77 deliveries.
India have played 1,077 ODIs since making their debut against England in Leeds on July 13, 1974, but Wednesday (June 17) marked the first occasion on which two Indian batters scored centuries in 80 or fewer balls in the same ODI.
Gill and Ishan shared a 224-run partnership for the second wicket off just 140 balls, helping India cross the 400-run mark in an ODI for the eighth time.
With their total of 402, India equalled South Africa’s record for the most 400-plus totals in ODI history, with both teams now having achieved the feat eight times.
India also became the first team in ODI history to score more than 400 runs and still be bowled out, as all 10 wickets fell in the innings.
For Afghanistan, Nangeyalia Kharote was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4 for 76 in his 10 overs, while Rashid Khan returned 3 for 48 in four overs.
Rashid struck first by dismissing Rohit Sharma for 48, with wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz taking the catch. He later removed Washington Sundar for 19 and Gurnoor Brar for 3, with the latter caught by Ibrahim Zadran off the final ball of the 47th over.
