Nine days in, and Border 2 is already rewriting the record books. The big-ticket war drama has stormed past every Indian conflict-based film before it, emerging as the highest-grossing war movie ever made
in the country. With a packed ensemble led by Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan and Diljit Dosanjh, the film’s box office run has turned into a full-blown juggernaut.
Directed by Anurag Singh, Border 2 is positioned as a spiritual successor to J.P. Dutta’s iconic Border. The film also stars Ahan Shetty and has found strong traction with audiences both in India and overseas.
By the end of its ninth day in theatres, the film had collected ₹252.25 crore net domestically, translating to a gross of around ₹303 crore in India. A major boost came on Republic Day, when the film alone raked in ₹60 crore net. Overseas, Border 2 has crossed the $5 million mark, pushing its worldwide total beyond ₹350 crore.
With these numbers, the film has officially overtaken Uri: The Surgical Strike and Fighter, both of which were based on cross-border conflicts. Uri, led by Vicky Kaushal and released in 2019, finished its global run at ₹342 crore, while Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone’s Fighter earned ₹344 crore worldwide in 2024. Akshay Kumar’s Kesari, another popular war drama, had ended its run at ₹202 crore.
The scale of Border 2’s achievement is also tied to timing. Many of India’s most celebrated war films were released before 2000, when ticket prices were significantly lower. As a result, box office collections then do not reflect today’s inflated figures.
When measured by footfalls, however, the original Border still holds the crown. Released in 1997, it sold over 3.7 crore tickets in India during its theatrical run. Dharmendra-starrer Haqeeqat (1964–65) also recorded nearly 2 crore admissions. In comparison, Border 2 has sold just over 1 crore tickets so far and is unlikely to catch up to those classics on that metric.
Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, J.P. Dutta and Nidhi Dutta, Border 2 also features Mona Singh, Sonam Bajwa, Medha Rana and Anya Singh in key roles. Following the film’s runaway success, Bhushan Kumar has confirmed that Border 3 is already being discussed.
