US President Donald Trump on Wednesday has once again warned Iran that any attack on a ship in the Strait of Hormuz will trigger an American military response, issuing one of his strongest public threats
since tensions between Washington and Tehran escalated.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that from this point onward, if the Islamic Republic of Iran attacks a ship in the Strait of Hormuz “by Missile, Rocket, Drone, or any other device or weapon”, the United States would “bomb and destroy ONE BRIDGE OR POWER PLANT”.
He added that the targets could include sites “located next to, or in, the Capital City of Tehran.” The warning comes as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to rise.
US strikes continue for 11th straight night
The Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that the island of Larak in the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an American missile.
“At 2:48 pm, the island of Larak was targeted by an American missile,” Tasnim said.
It added that authorities were investigating the scale of the attack, the exact point of impact and the extent of any damage.
Late on Tuesday, the United States carried out strikes on Iran for the 11th consecutive night, even as Tehran warned Washington against targeting its nuclear facilities.
US Central Command (Centcom) said the latest strikes were “designed to continue degrading Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping” in the Strait of Hormuz.
Explosions reported across Iran
Iranian state media said air defence systems were activated in the capital, Tehran.
Explosions were also reported in the north-western city of Tabriz, the south-eastern ports of Chabahar and Konarak, and in the southern city of Bushehr, where Iran’s only nuclear power plant is located.
Iran, which has retaliated against the United States and its Middle East allies, warned of reprisals after Trump said the US would soon strike an underground nuclear site near Natanz.
The United States and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire in April, but hostilities resumed last week as both countries renewed fighting over control of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz waterway.
