Indian Railways is all set to introduce a new Rajdhani Express, the first in six years. The previous Rajdhani service was launched in 2019 between Mumbai CSMT and Delhi, while the very first Rajdhani ran
back in 1969 connecting New Delhi and Howrah. This upcoming train will be the 26th Rajdhani Express and will link Sairang in Mizoram directly with Anand Vihar Terminal in Delhi, providing the first direct train connection between the northeastern state and the national capital.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to flag off the train tomorrow, September 13.
The introduction of this train has been made possible by the new Bairabi-Sairang railway line, a 51.38 km route constructed at a cost of around Rs 8,000 crore. The line is considered an engineering marvel, featuring 48 tunnels, 55 large bridges, and 87 small bridges, with one bridge standing at 104 meters tall. Trains on this track will operate at speeds of up to 100 kmph, making travel between Mizoram and Delhi faster and smoother.
Route and Schedule of the New Rajdhani Express
The new train will depart Sairang station, 22 km from Aizawl, at 10 am on September 13 and reach Anand Vihar Terminal in Delhi at 7:30 am the next day.
Regular services will begin on September 19. Train number 20597 will leave Sairang at 4:30 pm and arrive in Anand Vihar at 10:50 am on September 21. The return journey, train number 20598, will depart Anand Vihar at 7:50 pm and reach Sairang at 3:15 pm on September 23.
The train will have 21 stops along its route, connecting key stations such as Guwahati, New Cooch Behar, New Jalpaiguri, Malda Town, Bhagalpur, Patna, Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, and Kanpur. This will provide an important rail link for passengers traveling between Mizoram and northern India.
What Makes Rajdhani Special
Rajdhani Express trains were first introduced in 1969 to connect state capitals with New Delhi, offering fast, comfortable, and premium travel. Over 50 years later, they remain among the most prestigious trains in India, known for their speed, convenience, and superior service.
With this new service, Mizoram will finally be directly connected to Delhi, opening up opportunities for faster travel and better connectivity for passengers from the northeastern region.
