A massive traffic jam, spread for kilometres along the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway in Gurugram, triggered as many as 200 distress calls on Monday evening, as the Delhi-NCR reeled under heavy rain throughout
the day.
The weather conditions impacted vehicular movement amid waterlogging in multiple areas. Heavy congestion was reported from several key roads and intersections, with commuters stranded for hours in long queues of vehicles.
According to the details, the Gurugram Traffic Police helpline number received nearly 200 distress calls until 7.30 pm, with commuters seeking assistance to move stalled vehicles.
Multiple vehicle breakdowns were also reported, while many called to inquire about alternate routes with lesser congestion.
Major traffic congestion was also reported on the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway (NH-48) near Rajiv Chowk, where a water pump was deployed to drain the flooded road.
Videos widely shared on social media showed an unbroken chain of cars stuck in traffic, their red and warm headlights stretching far into the distance.
Other bottlenecks included Khushal Chowk, Mahavir Chowk bus stand (where an underpass was inundated), Gurgaon Railway Station Road, Sheetla Mata Temple Road, Air Force Station, Agrasen Chowk, Bhondsi Road, Vatika Chowk, Tulip Chowk, Malibu Town, Bilaspur, Signature Tower, CRP Chowk, Subash Chowk, Golf Course Road, and near Galleria Market in DLF Phase-4.
More than 25 vehicles broke down till evening, worsening the traffic conditions further.
In Northwest Delhi, traffic was heavy near Lala Jagat Narayan Marg around Netaji Subhash Place in Pitampura, with a significant stretch of the Outer Ring Road experiencing slow-moving traffic.
Parts of South Delhi, including the busy Mahatma Gandhi Road, NH-48, and Captain Gaur Marg from Lajpat Nagar to Bahapur, were also severely congested.
The other major routes affected by the rainfall-induced traffic included Pankha Road in Janakpuri, Mathura Road, Vikas Marg, Lodhi Road, Rajaram Kohli Marg, New Rohtak Road, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Marg, and Najafgarh Road.
Traffic was also severely affected on the stretch from Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Setu to Jangpura towards Sarai Kale Khan, causing delays for daily commuters.
Massive jams were reported on Mathura Road, Old Rohtak Road, parts of ITO, and the corridor from Mahatma Gandhi Road to GT Karnal Road, leaving thousands of vehicles stranded due to the ongoing downpour.
ORANGE ALERT IN GURUGRAM TODAY
More rain is expected to lash Gurugram on Tuesday, as the Indian Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for the city.
As a precautionary measure, schools have been ordered to remain closed on Tuesday in some affected areas, while private offices were advised to allow employees to work from home.

Taking to X, Sirsa Lok Sabha MP Kumari Selja shared a video of the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway traffic and wrote, “3 hours of rain and Gurugram is in complete chaos. People have been stranded in traffic for 5–6 hours.”
Sharing another video of waterlogging in a part of Gurugram, she wrote, “This is the result of the BJP government’s incapability and failed planning.”

Sharing a video of the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala wrote on X, “2 hours of rain = 20 KMs of Gurgaon Jam!”
“As CM Nayab Saini only flies in “State Helicopter” and doesn’t travel on “road”, this is a “helicopter shot” of Highway in Gurgaon just now.”
“So much for the rain preparedness and crores and crores of public money spent on drainage, sewage & easing traffic congestion. This is BJP’s “triple engine model” of Millenium City Urban development – Central Govt-State Govt-Gurgaon Municipal Corporation,” he mentioned.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also shared the same video, and wrote, “Millennium city Gurugram. A double engine sarkar with a double the failure track record.”
CM NAYAB SINGH SAINI HOLDS MEETING
On Monday evening, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini held a meeting with deputy commissioners through video conferencing, reviewed the rain and flood situation across the state, and gave necessary directions to the district administrations.
The Chief Minister asked the officials to ensure that districts with school closure orders are “completely closed”, and directed that people coming into Haryana from flood-affected Punjab should immediately be provided arrangements for shelter, food, and other necessary facilities, according to a statement.
In view of more heavy rainfall prediction, the Haryana government also directed all field officers to remain at their headquarters and maintain strict vigilance till September 5.

Incessant rains over the past few days led to an increase in the water levels of some rivers, including the Yamuna on Monday, prompting authorities to open the floodgates of the Hathnikund barrage in Yamunanagar district.
According to the Met office here, Ambala, Hisar, Narnaul, Rohtak, Gurugram, Nuh, Palwal, Panchkula, and Sirsa received rain during the day on Monday.
The monsoon has been “vigorous” over the two states and Chandigarh since Sunday, it said.
