O Holy Night was also written in the 19th century, in France. Initially, it faced a ban for being considered too “theatrical,” yet people couldn’t resist singing it.
The hymn found new life when American minister John Sullivan Dwight translated it into English. A passionate abolitionist, his version gave the carol a deeper meaning. In 1906, O Holy Night made history again by becoming the first song ever to be played on the radio.
