Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated Sushila Karki on assuming charge as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal. Karki was chosen to lead the Nepali government days after deadly protests
erupted across the country that toppled the previous KP Sharma Oli government last week.
Nepal’s President Ramchandra Paudel administered the oath of office to Karki at the President’s Office.
Taking to X, PM Modi wrote, “I extend my best wishes to Right Hon. Mrs. Sushila Karki on assuming office as the Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. India remains firmly committed to the peace, progress, and prosperity of the people of Nepal.”

India-Nepal Relations
India and Nepal share a 1,751 km long border (across 5 Indian states of Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand). Relations between both countries are highlighted by commonalities in religion, language and culture.
Since May 2014, PM Modi has visited Nepal five times and Prime Ministers of Nepal have visited India ten times since May 2014.
Hours after former Chief Justice Sushila Karki sworn in as the Nepal’s new interim Prime Minister, the parliament was formally dissolved late Friday and fresh elections were scheduled for March 5, 2026.
Karki became the first woman to hold the post of Prime Minister in Nepal. Her appointment followed the resignation of KP Sharma Oli earlier this week after weeks of youth-led anti-corruption protests that demanded political accountability.
Karki is chosen through a public vote held by Gen Z leaders on the online platform Discord.
