- Coriander seeds: People also buy coriander seeds on Dhanteras as Maa Lakshmi is said to be fond of them. Seeds represent fertility and abundance, which are qualities associated with Maa Lakshmi.
- Utensils: Purchasing new metal utensils made of brass, copper, or bronze is considered highly auspicious. It is essential to fill new pots or vessels with water or rice before bringing them home, however. Avoid plastic.
- Broom: Purchase of a new Jhadu or broom, especially one made of neem or bamboo, is a symbol of cleanliness and the removal of negative energy, misfortune and bad luck from one’s home. It is said to invite Maa Lakshmi’s blessings.
- Idols of deities: On Dhanteras, devotees usually buy idols of Maa Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, to invite fortune to their homes and to remove obstacles, respectively.

- Iron and steel: These metals should not be bought on Dhanteras as they are associated with Lord Shani, who presents hardships on the paths of devotees. Aluminium is also considered inauspicious.
- Sharp objects: Items such as knives, scissors, needles, and blades are best avoided. Since these objects are associated with cutting and severing, it is believed that they can sever good fortune.
- Glassware: Glass is associated with Rahu, the shadow planet said to have negative effects on people.
- Black-coloured items: Black is traditionally associated with bad luck, negativity and grief.
- Oil and Ghee: These essentials are associated with Shani Dev, and are best avoided on Dhanteras.
