Working from home has been a blessing for employees, eliminating long commutes and traffic jams. But for some, it can become an excuse to skip responsibilities.
A Reddit post titled “Story of How an Employee
is Abusing WFH” has gone viral, revealing that an employee took a month-long staycation in Dehradun with his wife in the middle of a critical project and exploited his company’s flexible work-from-home policy. According to the post, the employee also went missing for several hours during work hours.
What Had Happened
“While the company allows remote work, it requires employees to work from office locations during important projects or client visits as part of its disaster and crisis management protocols,” the Redditor wrote.
The post added that the employee’s staycation was initially acceptable as long as he could deliver his tasks. However, the location had poor internet connectivity and frequent power outages, which hampered his ability to work effectively. The manager said that during this period, the employee’s performance suffered and he was unavailable for several hours.

“Then there are frequent power outages in the locality he’s staying in. Then he abruptly goes offline for several hours, leaving important work unattended,” the post read.
When confronted, the Redditor said the employee allegedly demanded that the company provide a 5G internet dongle and power backup for his laptop to ensure his availability.
“After several days I confronted him and the guy said that if I am worried about his availability, I should reimburse him for a 5G high speed internet dongle + power backup for his laptop. (LOL – the level of entitlement),” they wrote, adding “I guess I will be giving him a 3 star rating this year.”
How Social Media Reacted
Soon the post quickly garnered social media users attention, with many expressing shock at the audacity of the employee.
One wrote, “Why 3? Give him the lowest possible you can. Till then, mail him that wfh is denied for him as he is unable to afford a stable power and internet connection. Wfh comes with minimum expectations. If they are not being met, wfh should be denied.”
Another commented, “Dehradun has great internet connectivity and power outages last only for minutes. I doubt if your employee is in Dehradun or has gone on vacation to nearby hill stations.”
“This is the kind of people who makes it difficult for others to get WFH. There are only a handful of such people who misuse WFH,” wrote the next.
“I wish people would stop abusing wfh. Our company is trying to get them removed because of this reason. On some days I work or study a lot and literally CANNOT go to work the next day. And I still have to not create a bad Impression,” commented next.
